What! Why Happyness is spell wrong?
The unusual spelling of the film’s title comes from a sign Gardner saw when he was homeless. In the film, “happiness” is misspelled (as “happyness”) outside the daycare facility Gardner’s son attends.
Chris Gardner explained his spelling choice by saying the following, “There was a place once in Oakland, Ca. near the MacArthur Park station that became very, very, very important to my son and I at the most challenging stage of our journey, and they spelled happyness with a ‘y’ and that’s why it’s spelled that way… It’s definitely personal. …That particular place was a day-care center, and at this point in my life just getting my son into a day-care center was a major, major, major challenge and I had to learn about the food chain of day-care in our country.
“That ‘Y’ is there to talk about you and your responsibility .. for your financial health, for your life,” he said. “That’s not your company’s responsibility. That’s not the union’s responsibility. It’s not your father’s responsibility. That’s your responsibility.”
Who is Chris Gardner?
He is the man behind the movie of Pursuit of Happyness.
Born February 9, 1954 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Christopher Paul Gardner’s childhood was
marked by poverty, domestic violence, alcoholism, sexual abuse and family illiteracy.
Gardner published his autobiography out of a desire to shed light on these universal issues and show they
do not have to define you. Gardner never knew his father, and lived with his beloved mother,
Bettye Jean Triplett (nee Gardner), when not in foster homes. Gardner is indebted to Bettye Jean for his success as she provided him with strong “spiritual genetics” and taught him that in spite of where he came from, he could chart another path and attain whatever goals he set for himself.
Gardner’s personal struggle of establishing himself as a stockbroker while managing fatherhood and homelessness is portrayed in the 2006 motion picture
The Pursuit of Happyness (Full Screen Edition)
directed by Gabriele Muccino, starring Will Smith, and received Academy Award, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations for his performance. Gardner was an associate producer on the film.
A pivotal moment in his life occurred, after a sales call to a San Francisco General Hospital, when he encountered an impeccably dressed man in a red Ferrari. Curious, Gardner asked the man about his career, With only 2 questions he ask to the man : “What do you do?” and “How do you do it?.” The man told him he was a stockbroker and, from that moment on, Gardner’s career path was decide.
Gardner often scrambled to place his child in daycare, stood in soup kitchens and slept wherever he and his son could find safety in his office after hours, at flophouses, motels, parks, airports, on public transport and even in a locked bathroom at a BART station.

First of all, you have to define success. For me, it wasn’t about the money. Money is the least significant aspect of wealth. My life story is really about so many people who have connected in so many ways. In the movie alone, for instance, you can see that it is not about me. It is about every father who has ever also had to be a mother, and every mother who has also had to be a father.
It’s about every parent who didn’t have a parent and tried to give their child something that they did not have. And also, at the same time, it’s about everyone who ever had a dream, and everybody was telling them no you can’t do that, it won’t happen. But they made it happen anyway. So, it’s not about me, it’s bigger than me.
Don’t EVER let someone tell you that you can’t do something. You got a dream you’ve got to protect it. People can’t do something themselves they want to tell you that you can’t do it. You want something. Go get it. Period.
Chris Gardner is an inspiration to a lot of us because we can all relate to the kind of situations that he has been through.
How many experienced being left by a lover at a time when everything seems to crumble down?
How many experienced homelessness after being left by the one you love?
How many have to raise a child in the midst of all this?
Bottom line is that no matter what situation you are in, if you put your mind to it you can do it. Don’t let any situation define you. It is all about commitment, determination…
